Sku: 8744PKG

This informational patient book by physical therapist and clinical neuroscience researcher Adriaan Louw provides perspectives on the occurrence of whiplash, including the neurological basis of pain and treatment expectations.

“Whiplash: An Alarming Message From Your Nerves” is designed to educate patients on the nerve sensitization that patients experience following a whiplash injury. It offers a greater understanding of what has happened, how to ease the pain and the importance of early, gentle movement after injury.

Section topics include:

  • Accepting the accident
  • How nerves work
  • How nerves become sensitive
  • Accident issues
  • Nerves and pain
  • Strategies to help ease the pain

Adriaan Louw covers the nervous system “wakening” in the acute and sub-acute phases of whiplash in an easy-to-understand format, using metaphors, examples and color images.

Written by Adriaan Louw.

Illustrated. Softcover, 28 pages. Non-returnable.

Concise and helpful

I like the non-threatening languge and relevant neuroscience basics this nice little brochure gives to patients. It is similar to G. Jull's Whiplash pamplet or 'The Whiplash Book' by McClune. It does not include exercises, which is fine for me, as I like to issue my own. It reassures patients and builds self-efficacy. It's a bit basic at points but appropriate for a wide range of patient educational levels.

Tremendous information

This book does a tremendous job of explaining to whiplash patients the symptoms they are experiencing. It explains it to them in a very simple and non-threatening way that puts their fears to rest. The patients I have had read this have reported that this calmed their fears and put to rest worries they had following their internet searches...

Help your patient more easily get on board with their recovery

This booklet helps make my job as a physical therapist so much easier in helping these sometimes more challenging patients get on board with their recovery. My latest patient with an acute whiplash injury returned just today from reading this booklet and is already feeling better with decreased anxiety and said "...it reinforces what you told me." My colleagues who also work with the acute whiplash population in our large volume clinic also see the value of this patient information booklet, and are also now using it in their practice.
