important component of any rehab program

I am a doctor of Physical Therapy, a certified feldenkrais practitioner and a yoga teacher. The smart roller is a brilliant way to help people feel their bodies, learn from concrete fun exercises that are beautifully illustrated and written about in the book, which is a must. The pictures are well thought out, the directions clear, the science that is mixed in with the practical suggestions make this a great add on to any exercise or awareness program. The roller is different than others and adds variations texture, and possibilities that don't exist on other rollers. The possibilities are unending related to balance, functional strengthening, flexibility, and body awareness.

Simple to understand, detailed, and systematic.

I am a war veteran with a lot of mileage on my spine, shoulders, hips, and knees. I suffered from a lot of overuse injuries, trauma, and just so much pain brought on from improper training, Humvee accidents, and overuse. When I became a personal trainer I learned how to properly train and specialized in corrective exercise, which I applied to my own training. Much of the pain from the overuse injuries subsided. However, there were still remnants of compensation patterns, tightness, and joint restrictions that no matter what I tried; standard foam rolling, physical therapy, chiropractors, massage therapist and acupuncturists, I could not rid myself of recurring injuries. After meeting Stacy Barrows, I was first introduced to the Feldenkrais method. That literally turned my whole world upside down. For the past 10 years as a professional personal trainer I had never encountered a system so profound. I couldn’t wrap my head around it but I knew it was a gold mine. So I bought a smartroller and OPTP SmartRoller Guide to Optimal Movement and commenced studying. It was simple to understand, detailed, and systematic. I was amazed that such an abstract concept could feel so understandable. The concepts alone have helped me put motor learning into a proper perspective. It’s helped me systematically show my clients through a simple method of very conscious movement and how to move with more grace and ease, unlocking the movement they were born with or at least pretty close. With my own training, it has brought me closer to understanding why we do what we do and how we can more effectively learn to move well. I have used the concepts to self-rehabilitate myself. I have become a better athlete, bodybuilder, and trainer. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to continue using these methods in my practice for many years to come.

Smart Roller Guide to Optimal Movement

Smart Roller Guide to Optimal Movement by Stacy Barrows is more than just a manual explaining how to use a foam roller. It includes discussion of recent advances in neuroscience, and their concordance with various mind body approaches to therapy, such as the Feldenkrais Method. It takes complex ideas and translates them into simple and practical ways to improve balance, breathing, posture, hip mobility and power. And it is beautifully written, illustrated and designed. Highly recommended!
