Q&A: Thrust Joint Manipulation Skills for the Spine

Learn the Components of Safe and Effective Manipulations, Along with Evidence-Based Techniques for Thrust Joint Manipulations

Thrust Joint Manipulation Skills for the Spine contains information on how to effectively perform thrust techniques, allowing therapists and students engaged in the practice to understand and safely apply the concepts within the framework of movement-based therapy.

Thrust Joint Manipulation Skills for the Spine

Readers will learn about proper clinician stance; proper use of core and larger muscles; speed, amplitude, and palpation; patient position and direction of movement; and much more.

Color photos help demonstrate how to perform the thrust techniques correctly.

The book includes access to videos demonstrating 45 techniques.

Specific components of safe and effective manipulations that are discussed and demonstrated include:

  • Proper clinician stance
  • Proper use of core and larger muscles
  • Speed, amplitude, and palpation
  • Patient position, direction of movement
  • Fluid body movement and control

The book also provides in-depth information on:

  • The history of thrust joint manipulation as a practice
  • Scientific studies that reveal support for, and against, thrust joint manipulation
  • Clinical reasoning for when and why to use thrust joint techniques in the spine
  • Clinical examination and physical tests that should be done prior to manipulation
  • Drills to develop speed, proper use of the muscles, effective stance and palpation

About the Authors

Emilio Puentedura, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS, GDMT, CSMT, FAAOMPT

Emilio Puentedura has been involved in orthopedic manual therapy for over 37 years, working in outpatient settings with a focus on spinal conditions, lecturing and presenting seminars on the various approaches of manipulative therapy. After teaching for 10 years at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he is now Clinical Professor at Baylor University's new DPT program.

William O'Grady, PT, DPT, OCS, COMT, DAAPM, FAAOMPT

Dr. O'Grady is a nationally recognized expert in the management of spinal disorders and has taught manipulative techniques for over 40 years. He has served as chair of the Board of Examiners for the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT), and as an instructor in advanced manipulation technique for the University of Southern California spine fellowship program as well as an adjunct professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

From the Back Cover

Learn how to effectively perform thrust techniques for the spine in this textbook from Emilio Puentedura, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS,GDMT, CSMT, FAAOMPT and William O’Grady, PT, DPT, OCS, FAPTA, FAAOMPT, DAAPM. Understand when you should use each thrust technique, as well as how to safely apply the techniques to patients who have musculoskeletal dysfunctions, becoming familiar with the concept of focusing to engage the barrier for patient comfort.

Discover key components of manipulations such as clinician stance, activation of major muscle groups, use of core muscles, patient position, fluid body movement, and many additional clinical pearls that will allow you to refine each technique. Pre-manipulation exams and recommended physical tests after red and yellow flags have been ruled out are also covered, as well as drills to enhance your skill proficiency. In addition to color photos and step-by-step instructions that break down each thrust into an easily readable format, the book also includes access to online streaming videos that demonstrate 45 techniques.
